One of the largest expenses most people will confront in their lifetimes is for the education of their children and/or grandchildren. With expenses for higher education rising at a fast rate, paying for college can be a daunting challenge. State-sponsored Section 529 plans are available in a variety of forms to help pay for educational expenses, but they are not appropriate for all clients. This program will discuss the range of estate and trust planning options available for educational expenses, including the various forms of Section 529 plans, alternative trust plans, issues with the “Kiddie Tax,” and how these plans fit into your clients larger estate planning.

Speakers:
Blanche Lark Christerson is a managing director at Deutsche Bank Private Wealth Management in New York City, where she works with clients and their advisors to help develop estate, gift, tax, and wealth transfer planning strategies. Earlier in her career she was a vice president in the estate planning department of U.S. Trust Company. She also practiced law with Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York. Ms. Christerson is the author of the monthly newsletter “Tax Topics” and lectures nationally on planning estate and tax planning topics. She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, her J.D. from New York Law School and her LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law.
Karen L. Goldberg is a managing director in the New York office of RSM McGladrey, where she leads the firm's estate and trust group. Under her supervision, the group provides estate and trust services such as estate planning, post-mortem planning, and tax return preparation. For more than 20 years, Ms. Goldberg has specialized in estate planning for closely held business owners, senior corporate executives and other high net worth individuals. Prior to joining RSM McGladrey, she led Grant Thornton’s trust and estate practice in the Northeast. Ms. Goldberg received her B.A. from Boston University and her J.D. and LL.M. in taxation from Boston University School of Law.
